Vacancy Notice: General Secretary of the Conference of European Churches

29 November, 2023

Press Release No: 23/23
29 November 2023
Brussels

The Conference of European Churches (CEC) is searching for its new General Secretary. The vacancy notice has been shared with CEC Member Churches, Organisations in Partnership, and National Councils of Churches in Europe. The application deadline is 15 January 2024.

Based in Brussels, the CEC General Secretary is expected to provide executive leadership and organisational coordination and focus. This implies the execution and maintenance of the strategic course CEC has taken in recent years (the Call and Witness Strategy, 2021), while navigating the expectations of Member Churches as they are expressed in the CEC Constitution and the reports of the General Assembly in Tallinn, June 2023 (All One in Christ, 2023). The General Secretary possesses strong leadership skills to manage a diverse, international and multi-cultural organisation with a wide range of stakeholders. The General Secretary can be lay or ordained and must demonstrate experience of ecumenical, international and inter-cultural collaboration and dynamics.

CEC is a growing fellowship, bringing together 114 churches of Orthodox, Protestant, and Anglican/Old Catholic traditions from all over Europe for dialogue, advocacy, and mutual encouragement. CEC emerged as a peacebuilding effort in 1959, aiming to bridge Eastern and Western Europe during the Cold War. This original mission carries us forward today as we continue to build bridges between people, churches, and European institutions.

CEC offers an international, collaborative and dynamic work and peer environment with its new organisational strategy under implementation. The tasks and portfolio may therefore be subject to change according to organisational needs and a candidate’s qualifications.

Those wishing to apply must send a motivation letter, a Curriculum Vitae, including their church affiliation, and references from three different persons (including contact details). The application with all appendices should be sent by e-mail to CEC Vice-President Rev. OKR Frank Kopania, Chair of the Nominations and Search Committee, by 15 January 2024 at the address search@cec-kek.be.

The Search Committee, appointed by the CEC Governing Board, will shortlist candidates in January 2024; interviews will be held on 5 February, with the aim of selecting names for election at the next CEC Governing Board meeting in March 2024.

All applications will be treated with discretion and the work of the Search Committee is confidential.
