Rev. Frank Kopania studied Theology, Philosophy and Political Sciences in Germany and the United Kingdom. 

After his studies, he was Senior Pastor of Protestant Congregations in Germany and Program Director for Project Management for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT), a position he kept from 1998 to 2008. 

From 2008 to 2013, he became Assistant to the Bishop, Director German Ministries and Pastor at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). During some of those years, he served as President of the Evangelical Lutheran Conference in North America, (2011-2013).

He then spent five years as Executive for Human Resources of Pastoral Ministries at the Churchwide Office of the Protestant Church in Hesse and Nassau (EKHN), Darmstadt, Germany (2013-2018). 

Since 2018, Kopania has held the post of Executive Director of Global Ministries and Head of Department of the Churchwide Office of the Protestant Church in Germany (EKD), Hanover, Germany.

From 2018-2023, Frank Kopania was an active member of the Governing Board of CEC. On 19 June 2023, he was voted Vice President of CEC.
