The Conference of European Churches (CEC) and the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE) will hold the signing ceremony of the revised Charta Oecumenica on 5 November 2025 in Rome. The gathering will bring together church leaders to mark this historic occasion and reaffirm the shared commitment of the European churches to work together in dialogue and cooperation.

First signed in 2001 by CEC and CCEE, the Charta Oecumenica has been a cornerstone of European ecumenical cooperation for more than two decades. The revised version responds to contemporary challenges and reflects the evolving realities of European society and Christianity.

The revision process, initiated in 2022, was led by a joint CEC-CCEE working group. Input from churches and ecumenical organisations across Europe and beyond was carefully considered, ensuring the updated text meets today’s ecumenical needs. The renewed document aims to strengthen unity, promote peace, and encourage joint action among European churches.

As part of the gathering, participants will also be received in an audience with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV.

The Rome event will provide an opportunity not only to launch the revised text but also to celebrate the ongoing journey of ecumenical cooperation in Europe.

Participation is by invitation only.
