The Conference of European Churches (CEC) expresses deep sorrow and solidarity with its Member Churches in Austria following the tragic school shooting in Graz, which claimed the lives of nine people and left several others seriously injured.

In a letter to the churches in Austria, CEC General Secretary Rev. Frank-Dieter Fischbach shared the organisation’s condolences and prayers, saying, “We were deeply shocked to hear the news of the school shooting in Graz. We think of the victims, the injured, their families and friends, the school community, the city of Graz, and your country, Austria.”

Fischbach offered prayers for those who are suffering and for those providing support and care. “We hope for good doctors for the injured, for people who will stand by the grieving in their pain and fear, and for those who can offer strength and comfort.”

The letter also lifted prayers for pastors and church workers accompanying affected communities. “We pray for your church and all who offer pastoral care, for God’s Spirit to comfort and uplift.”

Referencing the recent Pentecost celebrations, Rev. Fischbach said the tragedy stands in stark contrast to the life-giving spirit Christians have just commemorated. “We are shocked by the lack of spirit in this event. And yet, we trust that the Easter Spirit of God will come close to those in pain, bring comfort, and lead them towards life.”

CEC stands in prayer and solidarity with the people of Austria in this time of mourning.
