The Conference of European Churches (CEC) held a heartfelt memorial on 28 November to honour the lives and legacies of two ecumenical pioneers, Marc Lenders and Helmut von Verschuer. Both were instrumental in shaping the relationship between faith and European policymaking, leaving a profound impact on the ecumenical movement and the European institutions.
The memorial brought together members of the ecumenical and European communities, together with CEC staff members, to celebrate the immense contributions of Lenders and von Verschuer to dialogue, social justice, and innovation. The event concluded with a prayer service at the Chapel for Europe, a fitting tribute to their lifelong commitment to faith and service.
Keith Jenkins, a close colleague of both honourees, praised Helmut von Verschuer as "an unparalleled inspiration, whose moderating skills and depth of wisdom enriched countless dialogues within the European Ecumenical Association." He also reflected on Marc Lenders’ critical role in fostering relationships between churches and European institutions. “Marc’s ground-breaking ideas, such as linking economy and ecology, were years ahead of their time. His dedication to quality and excellence remains a guiding principle for CEC,” said Jenkins.
Rev. Frank-Dieter Fischbach, CEC General Secretary, shared: “Marc and Helmut exemplified the best of ecumenical service, combining faith, intellect, and action. Their legacies challenge us to continue building bridges between churches and European institutions.”
Lenders’ advocacy played a key role in shaping foundational elements of Article 17 of the Lisbon Treaty, which established structured dialogue between churches and the EU. Von Verschuer’s wisdom and commitment inspired countless civil servants and ecumenical leaders to integrate faith into public life.
Through personal tributes and shared anecdotes, participants highlighted their contributions. Both men demonstrated how faith and innovation could address pressing social and political challenges.
This memorial reaffirmed CEC’s dedication to the ideals that Marc Lenders and Helmut von Verschuer championed. Their vision for a just and united Europe continues to inspire ecumenical work.
