The Conference of European Churches (CEC) has congratulated its Vice President, the Rt Rev. Dr Dagmar Winter, on her election as Bishop of Edinburgh in the Scottish Episcopal Church. A member of the CEC Presidency, Winter has been an active leader within the fellowship, supporting its work on ecumenical cooperation and dialogue.

CEC President His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain welcomed the election in a letter, describing it as a “good and wise choice” and noting Winter’s long-standing commitment to the Church and society. He highlighted her theological depth, pastoral sensitivity, and strong engagement with social and socio-political issues, as well as her dedication to ecumenical, intercultural, and interreligious dialogue.

Archbishop Nikitas also underlined the personal qualities she brings to ministry, including her prudence, insight, and a sense of humour that strengthens relationships and supports shared work within the Church. He noted that such gifts would be especially important in a time marked by challenges for both churches and wider society.

Expressing hope for her new ministry, he conveyed wishes for strength, trust, and supportive companionship in her leadership. He also reaffirmed CEC’s expectation of continued close cooperation, emphasising the strong links connecting Edinburgh with the wider ecumenical fellowship across Europe.

Her election marks a new chapter in ministry while sustaining strong ties with CEC’s leadership and work for unity, dialogue, and peace in Europe.
