17 September, 2024

The Conference of European Churches (CEC) expresses its deep solidarity with its Member Churches and communities impacted by the devastating floods brought on by Storm Boris. The storm has caused significant loss of life and destruction across central Europe, including Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Poland and Slovakia.

CEC President, H.E. Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain and CEC General Secretary Rev. Frank-Dieter Fischbach jointly conveyed their sorrow, stating, "We are stunned by the loss of lives and extent of destruction."

"On behalf of the Conference of European Churches, we express our sympathy and offer prayers for the young, women, and men touched by this event."

They also praised the efforts of churches, diaconal organisations, states, and private individuals who have extended their help during this crisis.

The floods coincide with the Season of Creation, a period many churches are observing. "We are called more than ever to recognize that protection of Creation and engagement against climate change are a priority in this time," the CEC leadership emphasised.

CEC continues to offer prayers for those affected, adding, "God keeps the souls of those who died, brings comfort and healing to the injured, and strengthens the families and friends touched by this tragedy."
