CEC contributes to theological dialogue in Athens

3 December, 2024

The Conference of European Churches (CEC) actively participated in the International Conference on “Orthodox Theology in the 21st Century: Challenges and Prospects,” organised by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens from 24–28 November. The event, under the auspices of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, was inaugurated by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and hosted a special session in the Hellenic Parliament.

CEC’s Programme Officer for Theology and Studies, Katerina Pekridou, presented during the session on "Orthodox Theology and Inter-Christian Dialogue (1948–2024)." Her lecture, titled Rethinking Apostolic Succession: Re-examining Ministry from the Perspective of Missio Dei, explored key theological challenges. Reflecting on continuity in the Church’s mission, Pekridou emphasised, “A renewed understanding of apostolicity as a mark of the Church offers pathways to strengthen unity across Christian traditions.” She underscored the importance of dialogue in navigating differing interpretations of ministerial structures.

The conference, bringing together 150 Orthodox scholars and ecumenical guests, examined the mission and role of Orthodox theology amidst evolving societal and cultural contexts. Sessions addressed the Church’s dialogue with sciences, culture, and spiritual currents, contributing to broader theological discourse.

CEC’s participation aligns with its commitment to fostering ecumenical dialogue and theological reflection. Events like these reinforce the shared mission of addressing contemporary challenges while promoting unity among churches.
