The General Secretary of the Conference of European Churches (CEC), Rev. Frank-Dieter Fischbach, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Waldensian Evangelical Church in Italy on the occasion of its 850th anniversary. He participated in the celebrations from 23 to 25 August 2024, in Torre Pellice, Turin.

Speaking on behalf of CEC, Rev. Fischbach reflected on the profound significance of the Waldensian movement's 850-year history, acknowledging both its past and present contributions. "Much of what your church has practiced and endured over the centuries as a persecuted minority and diaspora church resonates with other minority churches worldwide," he remarked.

He praised the church's steadfastness in the face of challenges, highlighting its commitment to social justice, the equal participation of women and men, the active role of laypeople, and its ongoing efforts to support social projects, migrants, and refugees.

Emphasising the church's importance to the broader ecumenical fellowship of European churches, Fischbach stated, "I am pleased that the Conference of European Churches can gratefully participate in your anniversary and celebration. It is a joy to be present, to witness the existence of the Chiesa Evangelica Valdese, and to recognise our deep connection."

The anniversary events centered on reflecting on the significance of the church's 850-year history, addressing the challenges it has faced, and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. The celebrations also included a worship service inaugurating the annual Synod of the Methodist and Waldensian Churches.
