The Conference of European Churches (CEC) extends warmest congratulations to the Catholic Church and its close ecumenical partners on the election of Pope Leo XIV. In a message addressed to the Catholic community worldwide, CEC President Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain expressed joy and solidarity, marking this significant moment for the global Christian family.
Archbishop Nikitas particularly acknowledged the deep collaboration between CEC and its key partners—the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE) and the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE). He assured them of CEC’s prayers and continued commitment to walk together in the spirit of Christian unity.
Pope Leo XIV, born in the United States and with extensive pastoral experience in Peru and the Vatican, brings a wealth of spiritual depth and leadership. Archbishop Nikitas described his journey as inspiring and a gift for all Christians.
Highlighting the Pope’s inaugural words, Archbishop Nikitas drew attention to Pope Leo XIV’s clear call for peace. “CEC joins the Catholic Church in this call for peace on earth, between people and nations,” he affirmed. “Especially in times of increasing conflict, this shared testimony to God’s peace is a precious gift.”
Archbishop Nikitas also underscored CEC’s commitment to ecumenical cooperation, reaffirming that CEC stands ready to work alongside Pope Leo XIV to address the challenges facing churches and society today. Citing 2 Timothy 1:7, he said, “We are confident in the promise that God has given us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
CEC looks forward to strengthening its collaboration with the Catholic Church under Pope Leo XIV’s leadership, continuing its shared mission to promote peace and unity across Europe and beyond.
